Hello, I'm Dr. Chen
When we meet, I aim to make you feel safe, understood, and encouraged. Whether you’re facing a crisis, feeling stuck, or working toward substance use recovery, I bring both structure and support to help you move forward. Many people I work with are working through stress, difficult emotions, or struggles in relationships. I believe our journeys aren’t always a straight line, and we can experience personal growth at any stage of life. Together, we’ll build on your strengths and create a path toward greater stability, resilience, and growth.
About Dr. Chen
Sandra Chen, Psy.D., is a registered psychological associate who helps adults and adolescents build resilience and find relief from life’s challenges. She works with people navigating stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship concerns, and recovery, and is known for her collaborative and validating style.
Dr. Chen’s approach blends practical, evidence-based methods—such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed care—with warmth and compassion. She believes therapy should feel safe, supportive, and skills-focused, helping clients not only feel understood but also equipped with tools for real change.
Dr. Chen earned her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University. She also holds a master’s degree in psychology from Pepperdine University and a bachelor’s degree in communication from Boston University. During her training, she was recognized for academic excellence, leadership, and her dedication to cultural inclusion, with awards such as the Harry & Izelle Shafer Leadership Scholarship, the Dean’s Award of Excellence, and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Scholarship.
Dr. Chen completed her doctoral internship at Aurora Behavioral Healthcare in San Diego, providing therapeutic services for active-duty service members and their families. She has also worked in private practice, community mental health, substance use treatment, and hospital settings across Los Angeles, supporting adults and adolescents with diverse backgrounds and complex needs. Her clinical training includes placements at UCLA’s Integrated Substance Abuse Programs, Exis Recovery, and Telecare Corporation. Prior to her doctorate program, she conducted DBT research and coordinated at CBT/DBT California.
Dr. Chen’s research reflects her passion for both skillful and culturally responsive care. She has studied the impact of racial discrimination on social media among Asian Americans, and how mindfulness and DBT skills can support people facing substance use, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. She has presented her work at national and regional conferences including the Los Angeles County Psychological Association, the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, and ISITDBT.
Starting therapy can feel like a big step. Dr. Chen focuses on meeting clients where they are, helping them move forward at their own pace while building practical skills along the way. She strives to provide a supportive space where clients feel genuinely heard and understood, tailoring treatment to fit their unique needs and goals. She is currently practicing under the supervision of Dr. Adam Sternberg.
